"MORE OR LESS AND ENOUGH"

Philippe Nathan, architect, 2001

The LUCA Luxembourg Center for Architecture is pleased to invite you to the lecture given by Philippe Nathan, architect, founder of 2001.

Our desperate appetite for aphorisms, slogans and maxims unmasks a profession deeply suffering a constant identity crisis. The current famine of manifestos and debates, compensated by rules and regulations and distracted by new methods and players, depicts a discipline shattered more than ever by the turmoil of time.

Architecture’s relentless attempts at compressing all the complexity of the built environment into a catchphrase and articulating a guiding principle seem to have ultimately surrendered to a diktat of the image, the virtual. Confrontations between dogmas of doing more with less, defining less as a bore or declaring to be a whore have finally degenerated into claiming to achieve more by affirming, by accepting. More through a mere ‘yes’? Meanwhile, the questions of more what or less what rot unanswered.

Between market economy and society of the spectacle, between climate crisis, the scarcity of resources and growing social inequalities, isn’t the framing of “enough” and by which means to achieve it of utmost relevance? 2001 will attempt to decipher the pre-im-op-dis-positions that have led through various states
of more, less and enough in a selection of projects.
